Chair of Sociology, in particular of Modeling and Simulation

International Workshop on Agent-Based Models and Complex Techno-Social Systems

ETH Zurich (Switzerland), July 2-4, 2012

Social life is increasingly characterized by interdependencies among actors, which give rise to self-organization, feedback-loops, unpredictable and unexpected system behavior, and other complex dynamics. Providing novel and fast ways through which the behavior of individuals may have implications for the behavior of others, information and communication technologies (ICT) seem to dramatically emphasize these tendencies. Agent-based modeling promises to be a major tool for a better understanding of such complexities that fundamentally challenge the way social phenomena are approached. The workshop invites contributions of cutting-edge research that draws on such techniques or on empirical data to study interdependencies in social life, with a special focus on techno-social systems.

Topics for potential contributions include (but are not limited to):

- Agent-based simulation of techno-social systems
- Self-organization of techno-social systems
- Modeling of techno-social systems
- Social experiments using techno-social systems
- Combining agent-based models with empirical data
- Tools for agent-based modeling
- Opinion dynamics
- Peer-to-peer networks
- Social media

Paper Submission

Paper submission has been closed. Full papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in a special issue of the journal "Advances in Complex Systems" (published by World Scientific). If you wish to be considered for this publication option, a full paper (15-30 pages) needs to be submitted by July 6, 2012.

Submission of abstracts has been closed.

Further information can be found on the website (/workshop2012). If you have additional questions please contact Dirk Helbing ( or Thomas Grund (

Keynote and Invited Speakers

- Dirk Helbing (ETH Zurich)
- Thomas Grund (ETH Zurich)

The workshop is inherently interdisciplinary. Relevant areas include: sociology and psychology, in particular, the evolution of cooperation, opinion dynamics, the evolution of norms and trust relationships, etc; physics, in particular complex (social and technical) networks and models of the dynamics of group behavior; computer science, in particular P2P systems, data mining (ranking and recommendation), information retrieval, and distributed systems.

- Normal participation: 240 CH
